Countess Evelyn Martinengo-Cesaresco (1852-1931) published Cavour in 1898. Camillo Paolo Filippo Giulio Benso, Conte di Cavour was a leading figure in the movement toward Italian unification. He was the founder of the original Italian Liberal Party and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia, and ruled it throughout the Second Italian War of Independence. Cavours plan to unite Italy first began by making Piedmont a lever by which Italy could be raised. Then he hoped to cause the Austrian power in Italy to receive such a shock that it would never recover. With the help of England he hoped to prevent the Continental Powers from impeding Italian Unity when the population desired to be united. Thanks in part to the political mind of Cavour the country of Italy was united.
