These two possibilities are so ingrained in us by our history, culture and upbringing, that we can only argue for or against one of those ideas, and are unable to wrap our minds around a third possibility, a God that doesn't interact. Even the most determined skeptics still refer to God as a "He", or sometimes "She", with even atheists remaining completely unaware that their bias reveals itself when they attribute a gender to God.
It's not blasphemous to wonder what a non-interactive God's reasoning might be. Job did it, and according to the Bible, he was a "perfect man". It's neither listed as a sin, nor prohibited in a Commandment, to wonder "Why?"
