This study examines comparatively the development of the water supply sanitation in South African towns, Cape Town, Grahamstown, Durban, and Johannesburg, from c. 1840 to 1920. .... From the resulting synthesis, the underlying patterns are identified. In a water scares country such as South Africa, understanding the history of their water supply is particularly important.
