Situated some twelve miles east of Glasgow, Airdrie and Coatbridge (collectively known as the Monklands), are two former industrial towns whose history is steeped in iron and steel and other heavy industries, as well as weaving.
In this fascinating volume of more than 180 images, Douglas G. MacDonald captures life in the area as it was – and is now. With sections on work, streets, buildings, recreation and people, all aspects of life in the area are covered, revealing the changes that this part of North Lanarkshire has witnessed and providing a fascinating insight into a way of life now lost.
Featuring many previously unpublished images, this pictorial record will appeal to all who remember the area as it was, and offer a snapshot of the past to new generations.
