Ivar joins Tostig's sons Skuli and Ketil on Ingeld's ship on his way to Roskilde, to raise men and ships for Eadgar. In seeking out half-brothers King Svein and Jarl Osbeorn, Ivar meets his uncle Hunding's friend Tofig. With Tofig's son Gyrth they sail to where Hunding started out many years before.
North of Whitby Ivar is taken by the Normans, his Welsh mountain pony cut down under him by their crossbows. Shire reeve William Malet is delighted to have him in his grasp. His joy is short-lived. Ivar's woman Braenda uses guile to free Ivar and soon he is on his way north to give Eadgar the good news of Svein's promise to send a fleet.
Soon he is together with his friends Saeward, Hringolf and brothers at Maelcolm's court. After a short spell early in 1069 on campaign against the Norsemen Ivar is on his way south with Eadgar and the young earls as well as Harding and Osgod. They meet Jarl Osbeorn with two of Svein's sons on the coast north of the Tyne and agree a meeting by the Humber to march on York.
Having taken William Malet's stronghold their plans begin to go awry...
