Semiotic Warfare looks at the Chinese avant-garde art movement in the 1980s. It takes the perspective that this art was a factor in the radical political and social changes that took place in the first decennium after the Cultural Revolution. The author reveals the relationship between art and post-revolution changes through an analysis of visual signs employed in works of art subject to controversy during the period.
