Basic History of Modern Hungary, 1867-1999
Dr. Kiraly's book describes 132 years of Hungary's history and explains the causes and effects of ten changes of regimes. During the first five decades, Habsburg bureaucrats made decisions on Hungary's foreign policy and most of her economy. After 1939, Nazis dictated policies, occupied the country, and superimposed a Nazi regime. From 1944, the Soviet Union occupied and ruled Hungary for more than half a century. Only in 1990 did Hungary enjoy full sovereignty with complete freedom for her citizens. Democracy prevails in Hungary 2000. Dr. Kiraly was an eyewitness and/or participant (as a high military or government official) for almost half the period under consideration.
