This is a critical analysis of drawing regional boundaries for the "new" South Africa. The demarcation exercise formed part of the historic multi-party negotiations in South Africa and was part of the constitution writing process preceding the first democratic elections in South Africa. The book thus provides insights into the politics of negotiation, diverse sectoral interests and cleavages in South Africa as well as regional contestation over boundaries and key issues influenced by or affecting regional political economy. The book also provides an assessment of the first year of provincial regional governments and critically reflects on the future of provinces in South Africa.
