Aram Ilyich Hachaturyan (1903–1978) is truly considered to be the classic of the Russian music ever living in the 20th century. Among his creations there are numerous drama, symphony and chamber compositions, such as the world known ballet “Spartacus” and “Gayane”, three symphonies, three concertos for solo instruments with orchestra, three concertos-rhapsodies, choruses, music for theatre and cinema.
The genre of concerto takes special place in Hachaturyan’s creation. The composer confessed he preferred colourful brilliant style, where improvising element dominates setting liberated competition between the soloist-virtuoso and symphony orchestra. The first triad of instrumental concertos (for piano, violin and violoncello) appeared during the 1930–1940.
The second triad embraces concertos-rhapsodies of one movement (for the same soloists) referring to 1960ies. The Concerto-rhapsody for piano and orchestra completed in 1967 became the last composition by Aram Hachaturyan in this genre. Its premiere took place in Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod) on December 9, 1968.
