In a medieval world ruled by twelve separate lords, vampiric creatures called bloodsuckers run rampant, feeding on the life force of humans and animals and turning them into hollow shells known as ghouls. Only the legendary nine mystical warriors known as the demigods can stand against them. Row is a young bloodsucker recently driven from her home by one of the nine. Now she is on the run with only the help of her human servant, Champaign, a former knight of the castle she lived in. Soon afterward the pair meet a young orphaned boy named Seamus who discovers Row's secret. With no other choice, Row and Champaign force him to follow them as they traverse the twelve territories, encountering everything from ghouls to demigods on their journey.
