The publication is a summary of Doctor Ikali Karvinen’s doctoral thesis, which is part of a research project in a public health research programme in the Medical Faculty of the University of Kuopio. The doctoral thesis belongs to a research project in comparative health culture. Doctor Karvinen has completed part of his studies in Kenya. He explores dimensions of religiosity and spirituality of one indigenous nation. The author describes spiritual health using an ethno-philosophical approach. Doctor Karvinen’s research is a significant starting point for bringing a new view to research in public health and its application especially in developing countries. He proves that an element of faith is a significant factor in understanding an individual’s life. In the publication there is a laudable description of how the traditional healers in Africa still have their own roles and influence in healing diseases, which is also appreciated by doctors. Doctor Karvinen’s work is an excellent demonstration also of medical and visual anthropology. The work is completed by using many excellent and touching photographs.
