This book is based on the papers presented in the "Transcultural Encounters Symposium" that took place at the University of Oulu on December 12th–13th, 2013. It was the first international event organized by the new Transcultural Encounters research community, which was established in 2012 in the Faculty of Humanities at the same university. It convened nine research groups to the crossroads of history, archaeology, cultural anthropology, literary research, cultural research, Sámi studies, language research, and socio-linguistics.
