Because chemical potential is the driving force of many important physical, chemical, and biological processes, its applications extend to essentially all natural sciences: chemistry, biology, physics, geology, soil sciences, etc. The authors here propose a book that will unify a strong fundamental development of the chemical potential concept with analytical techniques applicable to the practitioner.

Chemical potential is a concept entrenched in chemistry...classical analytical chemistry. All beginning and advanced courses cover this topic. While this book will not serve as a primary textbook, the topic is well-known to all chemists and has applications well beyond coursework. There has been no new book in this area in about 15 years, since Harned's famous Multicomponent Electrolyte Solutions, though there are large treatments and sections in - for example - Strobel's Chemical Instrumentation 3e (JWS), Karger's Introduction to Separation Science (JWS), and Giddings' Unified Separation Science (JWS).

The reviews of the proposal were strong, all recommending publication. Roger Bates and Paul Sadek recommended organizational and coverage changes to draw in practitioners. The authors agreed to focus on organizing the book per the reviewers' suggestions with the aim to appeal to practitioners.
