Escapist fiction with pirates, kidnap and romance thrown into an exotic adventure based on historical fact. Barbary pirates raid the coast of Cornwall in 1625, kidnapping villagers to be sold into slavery in Morocco. Among them is feisty Catherine Anne Tregenna, who catches the eye of the captain. Her diary, which forms the centre of the novel is framed by a contemporary romance, and there is much in the story which mirrors the author Jane Johnson's own life.
