1930. From the Foreword: My lead dog, Thunder, is as fine actually as is Thunder in the story. I have drawn from my experiences in Alaska, in Labrador, and in the high Sierras, and from my years of trapping and dog raising for the fabric of my story. It is a plain story, plainly told, with the one purpose in view: that of entertaining the reader for a brief space and giving him a glimpse of the grand mountain country.
