In the years following the collapse of the Soviet Union, a new border emerged between East and West. Photographer Jens Olof Lasthein has traveled repeatedly to the eastern side of that border, first in 1984 and most recently in 2007. From the White Sea in the north to the Black Sea in the south, Lasthein has created a very personal portrait of the intersection between the formerly communist East and the European Union. The border is now more diffuse and shifting than it was when a nearly impermeable Iron Curtain stood between the two sides, but much remains the same.

Lasthein is one of the most exciting photographers working in Sweden today, with some thirty exhibitions to his credit. His latest book, Moments in Between, has won multiple awards. Lasthein works with a panoramic camera normally used for landscape photography, producing unique images of environments and people that breathe nearness and a sense of humor, but also reflection and gravity. White Sea Black Sea was published simultaneously in Great Britain and the United States.

Han har på ett alldeles personligt sätt dokumenterat gränslandet mellan dagens öst och EU. Gränsen är i dag mer diffus och föränderlig än på järnridåns tid, men mycket är sig ändå likt.

Jens Olof Lasthein är en av dagens mest spännande fotografer. Han har ett trettiotal utställningar bakom sig, och hans senaste bok Moments in Between har blivit flerfaldigt prisbelönad. Han arbetar med en panoramakamera som vanligtvis brukar användas för att fotografera landskap. Hans säregna bilder av miljöer och dess människor andas närhet och humor, men också reflektion och allvar.
