This book is quite exceptional. It is the result of a meeting that took place in the late 1960s between a young Sámi reindeer herder and a French student. Fifty years later, they met again to exchange views on the situation in Sápmi, Sameland. Both of them have a desire to bring knowledge about the Sámi people to a broader audience of young and old in many countries, Sámi and non-Sámi, through the medium of photography. Preserved for posterity, these moments help us to reflect on both the transient and the permanent nature of humans, activities and places. At a time when everything must always happen faster, the photograph invites contemplation. In an age when everything is transitory, it contributes to stability.
