Across the Face of France Liberation and Recovery, 1944-63
This book describes aspects of the liberation of France in 1944. The author, who fought across France with the 134th Infantry, follows their approximate liberation route – from the Normandy beaches, Sainte-Mére Église, and Saint-Lô, through Orléans and Nancy, east to Sarreguemines and the Saar – and then revisits the towns ten and twenty years later. The book is not only a military history but a report on the social, economic, and political reconstruction of postwar France.
