This pilot study in adapting computer technology to long prose works demonstrates the possibilities of the key-word-out-of-context (KWOC) format. The work falls into three parts: (1) a field of reference which is in fact a text of the novel created by collating the Heinemann and Kent editions; (2) an index which alphabetizes essentially all the words in the text and lists the locations in the field of reference in which the key word occurs; (3) a table of word frequency and related statistical information. The objective of this totally new concordance is to build a basis for positively verifiable descriptive statements about language and structure in prose fiction."
