This description arose out of a desire to make a new meditation of the Passion, yet neither from the standpoint of the Sacrifice of the Godhead, nor in the light of the crucifixion of Perfect Manhood. This time the author tried to approach the mystery along different lines, on something which made him travel by the road himself, so that he was nailed to the cross, and suffered thirst, and died. He wished to make the Passion something of a personal experience, rather than to sit down & watch the stage.
