Instead she met and fell in love with black South African writer and political activist, Alfred Hutchinson. South Africa then was no place for a mixed race relationship so they made the hazardous journey across Africa to Ghana. Alfred told the story of his journey in Road to Ghana, recently republished by Penguin Books. In The Other Side of the Road Hazel tells her side of the story; a story of love, of racial prejudice and alienation set against the background of the turbulent 1960s.
