There is an extensive introductory essay which provides the context for the documents and discusses the controversies over citizenship and rights in Enlightenment and Revolutionary France. Many of the documents have never been published before in English and they allow the students to read and analyse firsthand the many debates over human rights engendered by the French Revolution.
