Quagmire, an eight-year-old trainee ranger, is led on a quest to the butterflies of Quadralius, who have not chosen for hundreds of years, to see if he is to be the chosen one. The quest is shrouded in secrecy. Not even the court oracle, Dalos, nor the apprentice ranger, Trilane, who are there for his protection and are to be his constant companions, know of Quagmire's true identity - a prince. He must be protected from Barbarian attack for this reason. Trilane's character is distracted from his mission in the guise of temptation from women and female eunuchs, who pleasure him with their eroticism. Despite this, he does not stray for long and completes his mission, even with the many complications and setbacks which befall their journey.
