Rabindranath Tagore's reputation in the West has been based primarily on his mystical poetry. But Tagore also wrote novels of social realism. Tthese essays concentrate on this 'other Tagore'. They explicate his writings in relation to its historical and literary context and draw out those aspects that continue to bear on contemporary society.
