Tyneside's Great War - The Home Front 1914-1918
For the first time in history, the Great War brought conflict right to the doorsteps of ordinary people. While many Tynesiders joined the armed forces, those who stayed at home had to cope with everything from zeppelin raids to rationing. As a world-renowned industrial centre, the region supplied munitions, arms, ships and even aircraft that helped to win the war, while trying to keep daily life running as smoothly as possible. Diaries, newspaper reports and archive photographs provide a first-hand glimpse of life at a time when even buying a drink for a friend was a criminal offence. Over 70 archive images and maps.
