Childs was dormant. He spent thirty years at Cambridge, burying the War he had fought - and the War was over. That was why, in good faith, he went to a conference in Zagreb to listen to fellow lecturers in Greek culture. A day later, he was in East Germany, bound and being kicked methodically. An eternity later, he was in West Germany, without passport or money, and only his intellect to get him home - and the War wasn't over.
