This book examines Caribbean history from the first discovery by Europeans in Columbus's voyage to the New World to when the Caribbean became a pawn in the European struggle for empire and a victim of European steel, gunpowder and disease to the twentieth century when the United States largely replaced Europe as the dominant player in the area, and intervened when it perceived its regional interests were threatened.
