Canon of St Paul's Cathedral, Collins ran a single-minded, constantly creative campaign over decades to materially support those waging the struggle against apartheid - assisting leaders like Nelson Mandela, township and rural activists, as well as families with loved ones imprisoned, exiled or killed. The success of the organisations he founded - the International Defence and Aid Fund (IDAF) and Christian Action - greatly assisted in the liberation of South Africa. IDAF's significance was immense and the actions of Collins remind us that the overcoming of apartheid was a triumph of civil society.
