The background of this anthology is the Nordic-Baltic Symposium on Sports History 2023 that brought together scholars, historians, and enthusiasts from across the Nordic and Baltic regions to explore and discuss the rich history and cultural significance of sports in these areas. Held in the city of Jyväskylä, Finland, the symposium provided a platform for the exchange of ideas and research findings on various aspects of Sports History.

This anthology consists of individual articles, which can be read separately. However, in the Symposium the presentations were organized thematically, and even though all the presentations did not result in a form of article, the similar kind of thematical structure is used in this anthology. lt is not an anthology of Sport History but one of History of Sports contributed by various disciplines and their points of departures. Therefore, the articles should not be read as traditional history but by paying attention to the approaches of them.
