Towering high above the Old Town, the mighty Fortress Hohensalzburg, with its thousand-year history, looks down over the Salzach Valley. After the Prince-Archbishopric of Salzburg was secularized in 1803, the Fortress was used as barracks, depot and prison. But deep within its walls, far from the "tourist trail", are ancient chambers, store-rooms and soldiers' quarters; untouched for centuries, these are not accessible to visitors.
