"Inner City Nursery Rhymes" captures the spirit of traditional verses through whimsical rhymes and real-world imagery in a language that reflects contemporary times. Depicting commonplace scenes in urban settings, "Inner City Nursery Rhymes" ranges from sassy and street-wise to childlike and inquisitive. Based upon author Barbara Harvey's vast experience, the poems were created using the language, events, and experiences familiar to inner city children. The rhymes are designed to stimulate, motivate, teach, and amuse children 2-10 years of age. Illustrator Linda Kaplan's adorable, Cabbage Patch-like kids count out toys, sing about animals, and dance up and down the alleyways. Although the toys may be broken at times or the alleyways strewn with debris, each rhyme delivers an important message that teaches children to make the most of who they are and appreciate what they have.
