Elder Conklin and Other Stories
1920. Harris, notorious author and editor of some of the top literary journals of his day, with a reputation as a rogue and womanizer, scandalized Britain, Europe and America in the 1920s with his autobiography, My Life and Loves. This was Harris' first book and demonstrates his gift for story-telling. The title story set in the Kansas that Harris had known some twenty years before, tells of an old man, his daughter and their lodger. Each is wonderfully cursed in their own way, leading to a predictably unfortunate climax. A Modern Idyll, is a beautifully cynical love story in which the protagonists are a preacher and a married member of his congregation.
