Beranger's Views of Ireland
A selection of 47 watercolour sketches by Gabriel Beranger are published here alongside an informative text by Peter Harbison. Gabriel Beranger (1729-1817) was a Hugenot artist and antiquarian. Sir William Wilde wrote of him that "No one of his time could draw an old castle, a cromlech, or a round tower better". With famous Irish historical sites such as Bective Abbey, Glendalough, Blarney Castle and Mount Venus Dolmen re-imagined here, these colour drawings open up vistas of Ireland which had been hidden from view since the 18th century.
