Richard and Sandra Woodrough only wanted to raise normal, healthy, happy children. When one of their children insists at an early age that he was supposed to have been born female, they find themselves facing a way of life that they had never imagined. In their conservative Utah town, his behavior and feminine dress bring criticism, isolation, and violence as he struggles to find his way. Jamieas family must deal with the communityas reaction to his decision. No one faces the difficulties as fully as Jamieas mother, Sandra, who stands by him as she faces discrimination and violence. In the end, it is Richardas response that destroys the family that had once been happy and secure. Sandra and Jamie are left to find new lives on their own.
