Dictionaries make fascinating reading when they are seen in their historical, educational and linguistic context. Working from a modern cultural perspective, the author uses her own research and the research of others to tell the story of German language dictionaries, and in doing so throws light on the viewpoints of dictionary authors and users and on dictionaries' academic and social dimensions.
