The Progressive Movement was a reaction to the growth of trusts and a conservative mythology behind which government was used to advance corporate needs at the expense of the rest of society. Progressives sought a government that would be responsible for the commonweal, that would act as a counterweight to monopolies and oligopolies. They sought governmental means to restrain corporate domination of politics and the economy. This work incorporates narrative and analytical text along with extensive source readings.
