This book argues that we are not at war with the religion of Islam, and non-Western cultures are by no means destined to oppose liberal political principles. But it also shows that Islamist fundamentalism is an expression of a broader phenomenon observable both inside and outside the West that testifies to the power of tradition and religion (whether Muslim or Christian) to resist (and even revolt against) modernity in search of an alternative mode of political existence--
