The end of 1960ies. D. D. Shostakovich characterizes young Leningradian composers. Valery Gavrilin is already known to him since the young man's laureateship of the М. I. Glinka Prize. The great master's words are positive, though а bit cautious: “Vа1егу Gavrilin is а gifty man, however, something keeps him from large-scale forms. Enormous canvases should not appear for their own sake, of course, but isn't it а good field for any composer to reveal new vital topics for to work them out to capacity? I admire Gavrilin's Russian and German Notebooks, but I do have а right to expect large-scale forms with Gavrilin's authorship.” The greatest symphonist of hе 20th century evoked Gavrilin's gift to burst out into the symphony-action “Chimes” and to continue pondering over Shostakovich's words all his life long. The 10th volume of Gavrilin's collected works includes three symphonic canvases.Contents:С. Belov. Introduction Valery Gavri lin and His Orchestra Scores OVERTURE С MAJOR.
