Veteran Los Angeles police detective Ran Price was starting to embrace the slow pace of his new job as sheriff of rural Auburn, Kansas. Absent in the sleepy town were the never-ending flow of violent crimes and the long hours of investigation, though it was a difficult transition for Price, known for his relentless desire to solve the most challenging of cases. All of that changes with the discovery of a gruesome killing in Auburn's city limits, and other deaths soon follow in what appears to be the work of a serial killer. Lacking suspects, witnesses, and useful forensic analysis, the sheriff must abandon his lone wolf approach and rely on the scientific knowledge of a determined county pathologist and the resourcefulness of a fellow officer before more people are brutally murdered. Together the three will face a force of evolutionary evil that has waited thousands of years to emerge from its genetic slumber, and with it a killer of supernatural measure.
