This working paper identifies five core nationally determined contribution (NDC) pillars and sub-components specific to the agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) sector, based on a global stocktaking of NDCs and alignment with the Enhanced Transparency Framework of the Paris Agreement. It can serve as a framework for formulating NDC priorities, planning processes and support needs in the AFOLU sector, as well as a comparative benchmark for highlighting gaps and entry points for ambition-raising in future NDC revisions.Understanding current NDC priorities and support needs is critical to upscaling climate action in 2020 and ensuring a progressive cycle of ambition over time. There is a need to unpack and assess national climate change mitigation and adaptation priorities at the sectoral and activity level, to understand the climate-related hazards and risks threatening ecosystems and the livelihood systems they sustain, and to identify the various barriers, capacity gaps and support needs impeding the dissemination of technologies and resources for the uptake of climate action on the ground. This paper is aimed at national policy makers sitting in ministries of environment, agriculture, finance and social planning involved in NDC planning and coordination. It is also directed at international and non-governmental organizations, development agencies and finance institutions so as to guide the provision of support towards closing the underlying finance, technology and capacity gaps impeding NDC implementation in the sector
