This handbook serves as an introduction to the most important written expressions and classical idiomatic phrases in modern Chinese for students of intermediate and advanced Chinese. It has the following features: (1) It is comprehensive. The twelve chapters in the first section deal with common knowledge of written expressions such as grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. Various patterns, phrases, words and their usage are also explained in detail. The second section contains six chapters in which the distinctive features of various sub-types of written expressions, such as news reports, academic treatises, literary description, advertisements, correspondence and other "applied" writings, are introduced.
