Local Histories rejects a one-dimensional art history in favour of an open encounter with works of art. Thus, the new presentation of the collections of National Gallery Berlin is an experiment. The works are brought into relation with each other along their specific local context. Situational 'snapshots' highlight the diverse artistic exchanges during the 1960s in New York and Dusseldorf, in the tough 1980s in Cologne, and the vanguard 1990s in Berlin and Los Angeles. This beautiful book, part catalogue, part magazine, part artist book, broadens the scope even further with accompanying essays, many illustrations, artists' texts, and rare archival material.
