This work is intended for children aged 9-14 years. From Babylon to the fall of Baghdad, for more than 5,000 years, Iraq has been known as the cradle of civilisation. In "Iraq The People", the ancient Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian civilisations are introduced as well as the Arab Empire that conquered the area in the 600s. The daily lives and challenges of today's Iraqi and Kurdish populations are presented with the help of candid full-colour photography. Topics include: the Macedonian leader, Alexander the Great; the Tower of Babylon that Hammurabi built, and his creation of the legal code known as the Code of Hammurabi; the Turkic ruler Tamerlane, and the conquer of Baghdad; Ottoman leader Suleyman, and the Ottoman Empire; Iraq after the revolution; the languages spoken in Iraq, their education, and the influence of ancient spice routes on Iraqi cuisine.
