The power of nature is a central theme in Life in Assorted Poems, the debut collection by 18 year old Faith Horne. "The roaring of the sea / the calls of the seagulls / brisk winds swaying the grass / eroding rocks crying for help," she writes in The Melody of the Sea. This vastness contrasts with the everyday issues such as exams, loneliness, and nerves addressed in some of her other poems. "We take exams and tests. / We pass, merit, distinction. / Some give up and some fight back," Horne observes in Exam. We all feel suffering and pain, but ultimately, nature's beauty will prevail.
