Stoke on Trent - The Hidden History
Stoke-on-Trent is well known for its industrial roots and particularly for the scale of its ceramics industry, reflected in the name 'the Potteries' by which it has long been known. However, its history is much more complex and varied than this, with important coal, iron and engineering industries also being based here, as well as the smaller manufacturers who grew up to support the industrial giants. This book also looks at pre-industrial Stoke, with the spectacular sites that have been revealed over the years, such as the Cistercian Abbey at Hulton and a Roman pottery kiln site. It examines the development of the city through the ages and presents a new perspective on the rich history of this flourishing city.
