The Caribbean has undergone profound changes over the past generation, not least in the social position of women. This new volume by Pat Ellis, whose previous book, Women of the Caribbean, made a significant impact over a decade ago, looks back over what has been achieved in the past 20 years, and forward to the issues and challenges still facing Caribbean men and women as their mutual relations continue to evolve in the context of changing development policies, the increasing incidence of poverty, and a population deeply affected by migration and ageing.

Pat Ellis, who has been in the forefront of research, education and policy advice in relation to women, provides a wealth of information on the changing position of women in the region. She identifies Caribbean women's concerns, problems, and needs. She documents the shift to a new stress on gender equity and gender equality. The more recent awareness of the specific problems faced by Caribbean men is also discussed. And throughout, she describes concrete advocacy, research, education and training, and legal reform programmes set up in order to transform gender relations. The result is an agenda-setting volume which will be invaluable for gender programmes and policymaking in the coming years.
