Although the author tried to approach, as well as he can and from many different sides, a few of the manifold aspects of the Spanish spirit, he is well aware how inadequate and superficial his attempt must appear to those among us who have devoted their lives to the study of Spain. This book is not put forward as an indiscriminate recommendation to visit Spain. Spain is not an easy land to comprehend, even for intelligent visitors, and, taken as a whole, it is by no means a land for those who attach primary importance to comfort and facile enjoyment.
