Bruno Andrade: The Nature I Paint
Ingrid van der Hoeven was born in the Netherlands, but her family roots are in Indonesia. She grew up in two cultural traditions and tries to express this in her work, which reflects her affinity with Asia. Van der Hoeven strives to unite her Asian and Dutch backgrounds through her forms and materials. Van der Hoeven uses contemporary materials - MDF, soft board and chipboard - which from the link with the country she lives in. Her sculptures look rather like stylised mountains with graceful feminine shapes. The soft board used for the 'Hill of Venus' was first stapled and pasted and then shaped by hand. The sculpture is affectionately known as 'The Queen'. Ingrid van der Hoeven studied at the Academy for Visual Arts in Rotterdam where she lives and works.
