Kapraun combines ecology, taxonomy, and the life histories of 79 species of North Carolina red algae in the first step toward a complete regional analysis of all inshore algae. Each paired alternative in the readily usable dichotomous key represents anatomical characteristics that are typically present and easily observed. Species descriptions are based on locally collected material and are augmented by 227 illustrations, including photographs and detailed drawings.
