Building the Baakenhafen Bridge
The special thing about photographing building sites is to describe the process and not just the result. On the way to a finished structure there are always individual phases which - viewed on their own - have a peculiar charm or make a key contribution to understanding the whole, ideally both. In the case of the Baakenhafen Bridge, this applied above all to the phase when the sections of the steel superstructure were lifted into their final positions. The bridge was a German-English-Belgian-Dutch joint project, involving a German client, a German construction company, a Belgian steelmaker, English architects and engineers, and a Dutch transport company. Wilfried Dechau followed the construction of this remarkable bridge with his camera, capturing more than just the especially exciting phase as the steel structure was assembled.
